  • Stock for 2 sawhorses and a Roubo style workbench. After experiencing first hand the chipy/splintery behavior the lumber mill warned me about, I switched to an English Workbench with Douglas Fir aprons and top, leaving the redwood to the support bits underneath.
  • Using my SCM / MiniMax CU350 Smart combination joiner and thicknesser.

  • Small holes for draw pegs, and I cut a bit out of the feet. One of my favorite Scientific American articles of all time was a paper about how a table with a finite number of feet could be rotated in place and always find stability. So, I gave it 4 3" square-ish feet.
  • Second Unit Assembly
  • My peg was insufficiently sharp, and I blasted out an enormous chunk on the back side. I filled it with The Resin of Shame. I also applied 3 coats of Waterlox, which is a tung oil with resin finish I plan to use on my bench. The dark areas on top were the redwoods reaction to an iron holdfast.
  • I have not cleaned up nor finished the second saw horse as I wanted to get on with my bench. Yes, those are badly laminated douglas fir 2x12's with some fill. The blank on top is a 5" square leg for the bench.
